Bicycle Caravan UK - Serbia

Latest update:

Friday 18 April 08,

KIN 60 – 8 Sun

Day 15.10

Ola Family, Dear Friends,

http://www.bicyclecaravan.org (it needs some updating, well aware of it.)

this is a long newsletter; advise to read through it and not to ignore the recommended viewing at the bottom of the page.

Normally this mailing should have happily gone out about a month ago, but then all of a sudden - you know it meanwhile - things turned violent somewhere.. You can meanwhile find lots about it in the media.. What is mostly ignored is that one of the (re)main(ing) reasons China colonised Tibet: the mineral resources to keep its' economy growing. And that is where Tibet (see also: Tibet section, recommended viewing) stands as a powerful symbol for most of the conflict areas on this little planet. But you all know as well that even China is becoming increasingly confronted with the destructive effects of its' economic rise.

So.. the plan for this year.. towards the European gathering in Serbia. ..from the British Isles: we can meet up at (or for those that can't get a ticket: after) Sunrise Celebration Festival. From there to nearby Stonehenge, to celebrate the new moon on Tuesday June 3rd. And from there towards Brighton, in time for something else (-ugh) the following Saturday... By the following new moon we should be somewhere along (or near) the Danube. And by the next new moon, on August 1st (the same day as the solar eclipse starting in Canada) we should be in Serbia. Though we make no obsession to be arriving at the gathering absolutely by that date; it's not a competition.

The ride is self-organised, non-hierarchical.. a bit like the gatherings. We'll operate a magic hat system during the ride, but in order not to put unnecessary pressure on the rest of the group do recommend to foresee a daily budget of about 10 to 15 euros; at times we may have to pay for camping. And please do check for yourself that you have the necessary travel/medical/third-party insurance(s.) To make it clear though: this is not an "organised tour" in the same way as a paid-for organised trip. At times some improvisation may be necessary. But with the right (rainbow) mindset things always work out. I suggest that those that have done so already before, and that are enough motivated give it a thought and that we go about things in a decentralised manner, with smaller focalising groups.

Most of the necessary information is already on the FAQ section on the website. Inspirational pictures and comments in the (Previous) Updates Section. The main thing is to have a bicycle that you're comfortable with and not to carry along too much weight. Anyone with a normal level of fitness should be able to do this, especially after the daily raw food breakfasts.. What we learnt last year.. after a while things like time, distance, objective, etc. did not matter that much anymore.. the effort did not really feel like it any longer.. the cycling became the daily meditation..

There is so much negativity around.. the Tibetan people have been horribly treated for so long. Many people from China are angry now that their big celebration is being targeted. And for too long meanwhile so much more negativity, unnecessary violence, suffering and destruction has been happening on (and to) our little planet. Let's together do our best to invert this whole spiral; invert the negative energies and create understanding. Peace can not be installed unless all of us who can start to really show the way. The ride should not focus on protesting against anything. It should be pro bicycle, pro people and pro planet. Trying as much as possible - within the realities of the world as it still is today - to do things the right way: overland.. self-powered, positive, low-tech, funny, painted (second-hand) bicycles (in - also - e.g. the Jamaican colours,) etc. In other words: exactly the opposite from all the absurdities now connected with the Olympic torch relay.

In the end it's a more happy, laughing planet that we're aiming for again.

Hoping that this may lead to some fresh (re)new(ed) inspiration and serious focus. And that this year's European gathering can set the tone as the first one with more people coming self-powered than with vehicles. Actions speak louder than words. Let's all just do it!

Anyway.. more than words: some recommended..

*viewing on YouTube: "Still we ride" (the main bit being the opening lines) "Eco-Groovy Bicycle Art Fest" "The Rainbow Warriors" (especially the Einstein quote.) And as long as it's still there (on the website, I mean) you can.. "Plastics Midway" (BBC world service, about the pollution.. plastics)

*http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org/uk/ http://www.rinky-dink.org

*tracks you might be able to find on the internet: Astralasia: Realise your Purpose * Zell & Rubel: We have waited long enough * Banco de Gaia: Qurna (Feed Your Head version) * (Shapeshifter) Gong: CAN YOU: YOU CAN (live) * Marlene Dietrich: This world of ours

No fear. One love.

"Tree"

PS: It was in June 1969 that "Give Peace A Chance" was recorded in Montreal, Canada.
